Defying the bloody rule of ruthless
dictators, the Rebbes Of Chabad-Lubavitch
risked their lives to keep Yiddishkeit alive
across the Soviet Union.
Despite arrest & torture, they succeeded
in maintaining an underground that fought
communist regimes with stunning resolve.
Their efforts enabled the embers of Judaism
to outlive those who have calculated its
destruction.
In Embers watch remarkable films of the
Jewish underground and learn the story of
their survival. Witness a cold war-era talk
by the Rebbe, in which he openly criticizes
the Russian government and predicts its
demise. See the transformation of the secretive
network into an open and proud religious
infrastructure. Observe the Rebbe's Shluchim,
as they perpetuate his message of love in
towns and cities across today's former Soviet
Union.
The circle is closed as the president of
Russia condemns his predecessor's deeds,
and opens the doors of Moscow's new Jewish
center. |

The Rebbe spearheaded a Jewish
revolution in the 20th century.
The Rebbe's message was as old as the Torah
itself, yet his approach was as rousing
as dawn. He urged each person, in personal
and communal life, to never be satisfied
with yesterday's achievements or today's
successes, but to soar tomorrow to even
greater heights.
Challenge is an inspiring selection of
public talks and private meetings with the
Rebbe, in which he edifies growth, responsibility
and love. In all matters of life, the Rebbe
teaches, one must never cease to strive
ever higher. |

The Torah Solution to Achieving
True Peace in Israel
Throughout Jewish history, through times
serene and turbulent, the People of Israel
looked to the Torah for guidance and stability.
“Only through steadfast adherence
to Torah principles,” the Rebbe insisted
“can Israel achieve true peace.”
Peace Upon the Land presents a retrospective
of several of Israel's military successes
and her failures, and spells out a clear
formula for achieving true peace and security
in the region. The Rebbe's words and actions
during each of these confrontations are
timeless lessons to be applied to any situation.
Included is never-before-seen footage of
the Rebbe's pronouncements on the eve of
the 1967 Six-Day-War, and many other talks
embodying the Rebbe's approach to, and special
relationship with, the Land of Israel. |

How four Chasidic Masters set
the agenda for Judaism in Their times.
Three hundred years ago, Israel son of
Eliezer was born in the town of Okup in
the Carpathian Mountains. Later on in life
Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov began the “Chasidic
revolution,” changing the face of
Judaism forever.
One hundred years later, Rabbi Schneur
Zalman of Liadi, a disciple of the Baal
Shem Tov's successor, was arrested by Czar
Paul I for fomenting revolution within Jewish
society. After his vindication and release,
his intellectual Chasidic system, known
as Chabad, took on deeper expression, attracting
the elite of Jewish scholarship.
One hundred years ago, Rabbi Sholom DovBer
Schneersohn of Lubavitch, also known as
the “Maimonides of Chasidic Thought,”
founded the Chabad-Lubavitch Yeshiva system,
ensconcing the philosophy of his forebears
in a thematic system.
Close to fifty years ago, Rabbi Menachem
M. Schneerson of Lubavitch undertook a worldwide
effort to touch the life of every Jew, and
to affect the morals of all humanity, with
the depth and warmth of Chasidic teaching.
In honor of the triple-centennial, award-winning
filmmaker Elliot Caplan sets out with a
group of international scholars from several
disciplines of Judaic Studies, to learn
about the evolution of Chasidism. In his
first-ever film on a Jewish topic, Caplan
examines the messages and social agendas
of these Four Points of Radiance on the
Chasidic horizon. |

A selection of vintage film clips
of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, the
Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe 1929-1950.
In 1929, two years after escaping a death
sentence by the communist regime the sixth
Lubavitch Rebbe arrived in New York for
a 10 month tour of the United States.
At the time, the outlook for Judaism in
America was bleak. The Rebbe boldly declared:
“America is no different”: the
New World is no less suitable for a Torah-observant
way of life then the “old home”
and will yet serve as a fostering ground
for Yiddishkeit.
Ten years later, in 1940, after a narrow
escape from the Nazis, the Rebbe again arrived
in New York, this time to settle there and
build a new home for Yiddishkeit upon the
destruction of European Jewry.
The subsequent flowering of Judaism in
America under the leadership of his son-in-law
and successor, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson
finds its origins in these happenings.
These vintage film clips document the dawning
of this era in Jewish history. The album
provides photographs, documents and newspaper
clippings that edify these consequential
events. |

The sixth day of Tishrei marks the Yahrzeit, in 1964, of the Rebbe's mother, Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson.
On this day, the Rebbe would customarily deliver a discourse completing the study of a Talmudic Tractate, and would often talk about the vital role of the Jewish woman, gleaning lessons from his mother's life. As the date falls during the high-holiday season, the Rebbe would usually talk on the themes of the holidays and the New Year.
This Farbrengen, commemorating the Rebbetzin's 17th Yahrzeit, was televised live via satellite around the world. |

Drawing extensively on Scripture, the Talmud, Kabala and Chassidism, the Rebbe would speak to issues of contemporary social and ethical concern. During periodic pauses in the Rebbe's talk, the thousands in attendance would sing Chassidic melodies as the Rebbe greeted the participants with blessings of “L'Chaim!”
To experience a Farbrengen with the Rebbe is to glimpse a meeting of the Divine and the human, the mystical and the mundane, the timely and the timeless. |
